Web Site Promotion Check List
Web Site Promotion can be viewed as a check list of requirements that search
engines look for in a web site and then the components that have to be put
in place to meet these requirements:
Keyword Density – Keyword density is the percentage of keywords to other
characters on the page. Too many keywords and the page is considered to be
non reader friendly, too few keywords and the value is diluted. By finding
the right balance, the web page will be deemed relevant to that topic.
Reciprocal Links – A web site is considered valuable
if other sites link to it and it links back to them. With no reciprocal links,
it is unlikely
that a web site will get good search engine rankings. The closer the linking
site's theme with yours, the more value you both receive.
No spamming – Search engines aim to weed out sites that they believe
cheat at getting high rankings. One of these methods is called spamming and
is the use of keywords text that site visitors cannot see. Typical examples
are white text on a white background or tiny text. Search engines such as Google
have complex computer programmes to catch spamming and Directories such as
Yahoo have human editors that screen a site for such things. These techniques
should therefore be avoided in your site.
No cloaking – Cloaking involves showing one page to the search engine
whilst showing a different one to the site visitor. Again, search engines penalize
sites that they catch using this technique.
User Needs – It is all too easy to concentrate on making a web page
appealing for a search engine whilst forgetting about the important thing,
the customers. A high search engine ranking is only good if customers like
what they see when they click on the web site. A well designed and constructed
web site will provide clear navigation, an obvious aim and useful information.
It may also provide a method of booking/ purchasing online. The more informative
and helpful a site is, the more likely that a potential customer will become
a paying customer.
The core of web site promotion should be keyword research. This is the investigation
of all related strings of keywords (key phrases) that search engine users are
typing when searching. Once complete, you will have a list of key phrases that
people are using when searching for your product or service. By performing
keyword research you can choose effective key phrases to target with your web
site promotion.
